In just a few weeks Heartland District (HD) leaders will gather for our 2018 Fall Conference. Our theme is EMPOWERED!!
In the Gospel of John, Jesus is seen as an empowering leader as He calls His disciples to His mission.
John 20:19-23 (NASB) says,
So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and *said to them, “Peace be with you.” And when He had said this, He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them and *said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.”
Here are a few thoughts about Jesus empowering His Disciples
Jesus brought PEACE to His Disciples (vv. 19 & 21)
These disciples were huddled in fear, doubt, and disappointment. Jesus showed up in the middle of their mess.
Application: Empowering leaders show up in the middle of their follower’s fears, doubt, and disappointments, and help them find PEACE (same word as wholeness, Holiness, wellness).
Jesus showed the Disciples His SCARS (v. 20)
Jesus showed them His scars (pain). Often leaders are tempted to not talk about the painful aspects of their life.
Application: Empowering leaders are vulnerable with their pain
Jesus SENT His Disciples (v. 21)
Jesus was sent by the Father (empowered) and Jesus sent His disciples (full-circle).
Application: Without sending the mission ends! Empowering leaders send!!!
Jesus gave POWER to His Disciples (v. 22)
With the same breath Jesus (the Godhead) (John 1:3) created the Universe, he now breaths His power into His Disciples. Think about this, Jesus shares His power with His followers!
Application: Empowering leaders
Jesus gave AUTHORITY to His disciples (v.23)
Jesus said, “If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained” (v. 23).
Jesus not only gave them POWER, but He gave them the authority to confirm His redemptive act in humankind.
Application: Empowering leaders authorize followers to advance the mission on their behalf!!!
MAY WE BE EMPOWERING LEADERS!
