I value my time in the morning with the Lord.

I like to do my Bible reading from a One Year Bible which helps me read through the Old and New Testament. The One Year Bible plan also has a plan to read a section of a Psalm and Proverb each day. I am currently reading from the NLT (New Living Translation) as I do my daily reading this year. I have always enjoyed reading in the book of Proverbs trying to glean as much common sense and wisdom as I possibly can. Proverbs is a book full of great wisdom and common sense that you, and I, can apply to our daily lives.

The word “wisdom” or “wise” and “understanding” occur over 140 times in the book of Proverbs.

Proverbs 4:7 says, “Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment.”
Wisdom is knowing the truth and how to apply it to any given situation. Proverbs 3:21,22 reads, “My Child don’t lose sight of common sense and discernment. Hang onto them, for they will refresh your soul. They are like jewels on a necklace.”

For many years now, when starting my day, I pray and ask the Lord for His wisdom for that specific day, and I also ask for Him to help me to have common sense to make the choices I’m going to have to make. I know through my daily reading of His Word and praying for His wisdom for each day, the Lord has been gracious to pour out so much wisdom as it has been needed.

We just finished a building project at our church, and man did I ever seek God’s wisdom is this project! The Architect and builder met with myself and the church council. When they presented the cost of the project my heart sank to my feet. It was close to $700,000 dollars! I knew in my gut that was way more then what we could afford to pay. I went home that night a little discouraged. I cried out to God for wisdom and asked Him what to do. The wisdom He gave me was to call the builder, and ask to go over the Architect’s plan with him. I wanted to see if we could lower the price without cutting into his profit. We were able to keep the same square footage and ended up spending $550,000 on the project! Throughout this church expansion, God has poured out so much common sense and wisdom to me.

I encourage you all–don’t do it on your own, seek Him first for wisdom. Allow God to impart His wisdom to you in every situation. He will give you the common sense to know what to do.
